Who it is for

You do not need any experience. The material was developed to be taught to beginners, and the mix is more forgiving than most people expect from concrete. Start with First Cast. The other tracks build on it.

What to wear

Wear clothes and shoes you do not mind getting concrete on. You will press, trowel and pigment wet mix with your hands.

What we supply

Materials are priced into the class. You work at a casting, pressing and troweling station on the workshop floor.

• Mix, pigment and forms
• A mold from the studio library
• Hand tools for pressing, troweling and texturing
• Gloves, a dust mask and safety glasses
• Stains, polish and sealer for the second visit

What to bring

You do not need to bring tools. In Vessels & Objects you can bring a shape you want to work from. Everything else is at the studio.

What you leave with

Every class ends with a real piece. A class runs over two visits. On the first, you mix, cast, texture and pigment, and the piece cures overnight in the mold. On the second, you take it out of the mold, stain it, polish it and seal it. If you do not want to come back for the seal, we can finish it for you.

• First Cast: a vessel, a planter or a set of tiles
• Vessels & Objects: a vessel, small stool, side table, planter or bowl
• Cast-in-Place: a cast-in-place form with a finished edge
• Mold Making: a reusable mold, plus one cast from it
• Sealing & Finishing: a finished, sealed surface panel
• Vertical & Sculptural: a vertical panel or sculptural element

After the class

Most people who finish First Cast move on to Vessels & Objects or Cast-in-Place. From there, Mold Making lets you design your own shapes. If you want a piece made for you instead, the studio takes private commissions.
